Statements on PRS

“A national poverty reduction strategy must deal with the elimination of causes, and not only the consequences of poverty; the strategy must be defined as an integral part of the social development strategy, which has a long-term goal of building a successful, but also just society, in which solidarity and equality will dominate… The PRS is not the Government's project, but an integral strategy of all parts of society—ministries, private businesses, NGOs, international development partners.”

Zoran Đinđić,
former Prime Minister of the Government of Serbia,
at the Conference «Poverty profile in Serbia», Beograd,
December 18, 2002

Three Strategic PRS Directions

Efficient implementation of existing programs and creation of new programs, measures and activities directly targeting the poorest and socially most vulnerable groups (children, the elderly, disabled persons, refugees and internally displaced persons, the Roma, the rural population and the uneducated), particularly in the least developed regions

The goal of these activities is initiating the process of qualifying these groups to cross the poverty line by developing their skills that are required by the new economy and that are necessary for ensuring the minimum of living standards. In relation to the most visible forms of poverty, this will enable equal access to employment, health services, education and communal services of these vulnerable groups. A permanent improvement in the economic and social status of the most vulnerable groups will prevent a continuing cycle of poverty within these groups.
